|
|
I'm going away for a few days and its made me think about what to pack.
What sort of recovery gear do you take when you go 4wding? Between my son and me, we seem to have accumulated a bit.
I usually take:
Snatch Strap
Shackles
MaxTrax
Exhaust Jack. ( Big bag that lifts the car )
A good Compressor ( dont buy a cheap one, they take forever to pump your tyres up)
Shovel
Tyre gauge. I run my tyres at about 18psi on the beach. Have even let them down to 15 when it was sitting on its chassis on an extremely soft sandhill.
Spare key. My Dad and I got locked out of his Pajero in the middle of a 20km beach. We had to break into it, which funnily enough, was quite easy
Things I really should take.
Battery Jump starter. Have you ever tried clutch starting a car on the beach.
Of course, I tell my Terracan owning son, that he has use of more recovery gear than me because he has my zook to snatch him out:lol:
Wow, I think I need a bigger car or maybe a roofrack that can carry it all.

get a small wrench " spanner for you guys" set, just in case a shock bolt falls off or something like that
and a saw for fallen trees that block the track. a lot of people carry chainsaws here but I just have a bow saw. aka suede saw. lighter and no gas to carry along. |

Too right Darren, you never know when one of your shockie bolts will inadvertantly come undone
Never thought about a bushsaw, but then I love my chainsaw

True GV88 but unfortunately, common sense is one thing that seems to be routinely forgotten. i'm packing my cable ties tonight.

I take pretty much all the same things you mentioned (minus the Maxx trak and airbag jack which I may get to when the finances allow).... but I like to throw in a shorter 'non-snatch' strap or length of cable - a lot of the time a gentle pull will get a vehicle unstuck and perhaps cause less stress on vehicle and less chance of things going wrong? I've taken the chainsaw on a few trips but am thinking of getting a good bow-saw instead (one recent trip the chainsaw shifted around on some rough roads and leaked fuel into tents and sleeping bags ..... should have packed better)
Whats this "common sense" you guys mentioned.... can I get it at Autobarn or Supercheap Auto?
Luckily I haven't got stuck in the GV yet but I've only had it for 4 months so there's plenty of time! I'm still getting a feel for the vehicle but I wasn't especially impressed with the tow points and have been trying to think about the best place for some proper recovery points on the front... the back is ok with shackle in the tow hitch reciever. |

I also have basic little tow straps. If it cant be pulled out gently then the shovel needs to be put to work. Its not worth bending stuff, and the GV's frame is about as thick as an old pop can. |

Snatch strap
Shakles

shovel
change of clothes
this will get you out of most places and i always travel with a second car. _________________

Well I carried all of my recovery gear on my recent beach trip, luckily everything I carried stayed exactly where it was stored except for the tyre gauge.
I cheated and drove the 250 metres from the beach exit to use a compressor at the local servo to pump up my tyres
Oh well, I still prefer all my gear to be in its pristine as new condition.

I'd have done the same... but I have a crappy hand pump

I'd "prefer" that too. but my gear is a bunch of crap I "borrowed" got the shovel out of my mothers gardening shed! so long as it works and its in the car on trips... |
